Report: OTT messaging will not cannibalise SMS

While over-the-top messaging could reach 20.3 trillion messages by 2016, it doesn't mean that SMS traffic will fall by the same amount during that period, according to a new report from Portio Research. The report claims that OTT and SMS traffic will grow side by side, synergistically, as the overall volume of mobile person-to-person messaging increases dramatically. Portio believes OTT may effectively slow down the growth of SMS over the next few years, but little cannibalisation will occur in the short term. However, Portio claims that SMS is at its peak and that operators worldwide "need to face the fact that nothing lasts forever, and no product or service or company stays in place as number one forever."
