Safaricom boss becomes UN sustainability leader

Safaricom’s chief executive Bob Collymore has been appointed to the United Nations Global Compact Board as an honorary board member for a three-year term.

The board, chaired by the UN Secretary General, provides high-level strategic advice relating to the UN Global Compact - a voluntary UN initiative that encourages businesses to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and at a more general level, the evolving United Nations-Business relationship.

Safaricom said the appointment is recognition of the Kenya-based mobile operator’s commitment to environmental, sustainability and anti-corruption measures, as well as the work it is undertaking to address the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 on improving maternal health and reducing child mortality.
