CeltixConnect, Europe’s first new subsea cable laid in over a decade, is now live and kicking.
The 131-km cable links the UK with Ireland, and will be used to meet demand for capacity and low latency from financial and digital industries in Ireland. The new subsea cable will provide back-up to existing UK to Ireland links, and replace some of the older connections.
Diane Hodnett, chief executive of the cable’s operator Sea Fibre Networks, hailed the lighting of the cable as a landmark in connecting Ireland to the UK and beyond. The cable will open “new opportunities for government, financial institutions and businesses across the country,” she says.
Sea Fibre last month signed its first customer deal for CeltixConnect, agreeing terms with information delivery platform operator Colt that provides onward connections from the UK to mainland Europe.
