Starbucks offers free Wi-Fi entertainment

Starbucks is offering free music, movie clips, books, news and other content through Yahoo over Wi-Fi in its US stores.

The coffee chain is promising “hand-picked premium news, entertainment and lifestyle content along with local insights and events” over the Starbucks Digital Network, which went live on Wednesday.

Yahoo will run the digital platform, which is built on the HTML5 software, offering iTunes, New York Times Reader 2.0, the Bookish Reading Club, and health and business content.

Starbucks has recently signed up FourSquare to add more localized content.

Stephen Gillett, Starbucks executive vice president and CIO, said the aim was to provide a “unique customer experience” with “culturally-relevant” and local content.
