T-Mobile confirms hack, denies private data at risk

US operator T-Mobile has admitted that hackers breached its network, but said it does not believe important customer data is at risk.

“We’ve identified the document from which information was copied, and believe possession of this alone is not enough to cause harm to our customers,” T-Mobile said in a statement.

In a missive dated last week, hackers said they had access to “everything, [T-Mobile's] databases, confidential documents, scripts and programs from their servers, financial documents up to 2009.”

The hackers had tried unsuccessfully to sell the data to T-Mobile’s competitors, and then posted it online  to shop it to the highest bidder.

T-Mobile said it had taken precautions to ensure the protection of their systems and customer information.

“At this moment, we are unable to disclose additional information in order to protect the integrity of the investigation,” the statement read.

GigaOM reported that T-Mobile was legally unable to notify customers until at least a week after informing the Secret Service and the FBI.
