Telekom Austria picks ZTE for converged voice network

Telekom Austria picked ZTE to help it merge together its fixed and mobile voice network to allow the operator to offer more advanced and converged solutions, including Rich Communication Suite-enhanced and Voice-over-LTE services.

Without revealing the value of the deal, which will be realised in collaboration with local systems integrator Kapsch Carrier Com (KCC), the Chinese vendor said it won the contract to provide a circuit switched/IP multimedia subsystem (CS/IMS) converged voice network to the Austrian group. ZTE said it will supply a mobile CS softswitch network to replace the existing mobile core network for Telekom Austria Group in Austria, Slovenia and Liechtenstein, and will also build a new IMS network for the operators in these markets.

ZTE noted that the solution will be cloud-based to reduce total cost of ownership, and will therefore allow Telekom Austria to serve the separate country operators independently and allow them to deploy new services in a more rapid and targeted way.

"The new ZTE CS/IMS network opens up the future for Telekom Austria Group," Hans Pichler, CTO of Telekom Austria Group, said in a statement. "It will enable us to easily expand our business while giving our customers the best possible experience of the latest fixed and mobile communication services."

The purpose of the IMS network is to support the rollout of various services including RCSe and VoLTE. "The IMS RCSe service will provide a carrier-class multimedia experience to users, helping the operator to deal with the challenges from Internet-based OTT (over the top) providers," ZTE said in the statement.

To date, ZTE has won more than 150 commercial/trial contracts worldwide for its IMS products, the vendor added.
