Vodafone Spain unveils budget brand to push back against rivals

Vodafone Spain will enter the low-cost market in a direct response to services offered by its rivals Movistar and Orange Spain.

The new "Vodafone Yu" service targets the youth sector and offers prepaid calls at low monthly rates, as well as low-price bundles of texts, data and calls, according to Spanish website Xatakamovil.

The Yu packages start with "Smart 8" where customers receive 20 minutes for national calls, 20 SMS, and 200 MB of mobile data traffic for €8 per month. The "Smart 12" tariff includes 60 minutes for national calls, 60 SMS, and 600 MB for €12 per month. And finally, for €16 per month, "Smart 16" customers receive 100 minutes for national calls, unlimited texts and 1 GB of data.

Calls between Yu customers are unlimited, with alerts being sent as users near the limits dictated for each package.

Vodafone Spain also aims to create a social community around its Yu brand by offering a dedicated customer web portal. The site will enable users to interact with each other, participate in promotions focused on travel, sports and job opportunities.

Vodafone Spain says Yu will also provide access to the RCS-based Joyn platform in the future, and will support more advanced messaging services to compete with over-the-top applications such as Whatsapp.
