Wikipedia hopes to correct "

Online encyclopedia Wikipedia said its volunteers were checking the biographies of American, Canadian and British lawmakers following some online "spin-doctoring," an AFP report said.

The report said the Web site, which could be edited by anyone logging on to its site, was checking the biographies after it appeared that some US lawmakers' biographies had benefited from flattering updates.

The report said the volunteers who ran Wikipedia discovered that the online updates had originated from computers in the US Congress, sparking a wider review of other political biographies hosted on the site.

The report said that in the US, some of the online biographies of several lawmakers were "edited" to remove certain facts that might have proved politically embarrassing.
