While it has become a badge of pride to have an app store, the chances of mobile operators being able to compete with the app stores from handset manufacturers look increasingly slim.
App stores have become an absolute necessity for a handset manufacturer wanting to succeed within the smartphone segment. Also, the consumer has come to accept that apps and services will come bundled with the handset.
However, operators face the additional challenge of rounding up willing developers for their app store efforts. The priorities for this group are clearly focused on building apps for the iPhone and Android platforms, with handsets from Nokia, Samsung and other Asian vendors next. Operators are in last place.
