General manager of wireless and voice services for Comcast
Some may consider it strange that we put a cable company executive on a list of top women in wireless. However, Cathy Avgiris, general manager of wireless and voice services at Comcast, is blazing a new path for the country's largest cable MSO by overseeing its nationwide rollout of High-speed 2go. We think the wireless industry better keep a close eye on her.
The High-speed 2go package bundles Clearwire's mobile WiMAX service with Comcast's high-speed home Internet service for $50 per month--a compelling offer that could be a big competitive threat to AT&T and Verizon. Currently Comcast offers two service plans--a metro service that gives customers wireless within the 4G metro area, and a nationwide plan that delivers 4G wireless service where available and coast-to-coast access to Sprint's EV-DO 3G network.
It's easy to see why Comcast entrusted Avgiris with the rollout of this wireless service; she is well-versed in launching new products. She joined Comcast in 1992 as a field executive, and, while in Orange County, Calif., she launched one of Comcast's first digital-cable services. More recently, she helped build the company's high-speed Internet business, which now has more than 14 million customers.
