Where it's based: St. Charles, Mo.
When it was founded: 2001
Why it's Fierce: CellCast specializes in sending authorized emergency alerts via mobile phones. The company's EAGLE (Emergency Alerts for Government and Law Enforcement) Alerts allow authorized senders of emergency alerts to develop a message, choose a specific geographic area for the alert and decide the frequency of the alert.
The message passes through the company's middleware, or broker system, called the Aggregator Gateway. The broker authenticates the message and alerts carriers and government officials where and when it will be delivered. The message is then sent, via text, email or other methods, to subscribers in the targeted areas via cell towers and emergency broadcast channels.
The bottom line is that carriers don't have to worry about the authenticity of emergency messages being sent to their subscribers. CellCast has worked with organizations as diverse as the National Sheriff's Association and the Rural Cellular Association.
What's next: CellCast may look beyond public safety applications as its technology also can be used by advertisers to deliver specialty content to mobile users in a specific area.
