Throughout 2008, handset makers and OS providers alike have introduced developer competitions to inspire the creation of new mobile applications and content as well as generate new interest in a particular handset or platform. Perhaps no competition yielded more excitement than the Google-sponsored Android Developers Challenge, which received close to 1,800 total submissions and ultimately awarded $275,000 prizes to 10 teams of finalists and $100,000 prizes to another 10 entrants. The first ADC may be over, but other device manufacturers and software designers are dangling their own cash prizes and distribution opportunities in order to attract the next wave of application innovation to their side.
