Company name: Ecrio
Where it's based: Cupertino, Calif.
When it was founded: 1998
Year it was a Fierce 15: 2007
Why it was a Fierce 15: Ecrio was well-positioned to take advantage of the growing mobile financial services trend, and strategic investments from both Visa and NTT DoCoMo bolstered the company's standing in the mobile financial sector. Ecrio also had a robust mobile coupon, ticketing and mobile barcode set of features, which many believed would drive mobile point-of-sale purchasing once these services became mainstream on the mobile handset. What has happened since it was awarded the Fierce 15: Ecrio is still in business as a mobile software company, and recently developed an application access technology that makes capabilities like rich communications and IP calling accessible to applications written in Java, Flash and other apps environments. In 2009, Ecrio developed a keychain version of its MoBeam product as part of its couponing, ticketing and gift card solution. The company said pilots for the technology have been conducted, with others planned for later this year.
