Why it's Fierce: This mobile measurement startup delivers exactly what the industry needs--unbiased and accurate measurement of data usage on mobile devices.
Mobile analytics are a hot commodity today and lots of firms currently offer mobile usage stats, but Ground Truth differentiates itself by using census-based measurements to compile the data it receives directly from mobile operators and other data providers.
Traditionally wireless operators have been highly protective of their customer stats because of fear that their competition will be able to use the information against them. But Sterling Wilson, president and CEO of the firm, says operators have no problem providing Ground Truth with data because the company gathers the data in aggregate and reports on a wide cross-section of subscribers. Wilson also says that this method of measurement paints a more realistic picture of the market. Ground Truth boasts that it reports on the weekly data usage of 3 million users.
Ground Truth customers are varied. Metrics on the mobile Web are valuable to all types of players including operators, infrastructure vendors, mobile advertising firms, mobile content providers and more.
Wilson and the rest of Ground Truth's management team hail from key mobile content firms including Qpass, Medio Systems, Motricity, Ontela, comScore and more. Long-time wireless investor Tom Huseby of SeaPoint Ventures is chairman of the board. Ground Truth, which officially launched Jan. 25, is backed by Steamboat Ventures and Voyager Capital.
What's next: In April, the company received $7 million in Series B financing from Emergence Capital Partners and Openair Ventures. CEO Wilson says Ground Truth plans to use the funding to increase its products, hire more development staff and expand internationally.
