Noted for: Hailo
London-based Hailo is a special kind of mobile company. The company is headed up by three cab drivers and three entrepreneurs, and they work together to unite potential riders with cabbies. Hailo has an app for riders and one for drivers, and users can hail cabs in nine cities worldwide including Barcelona, New York, Tokyo and Toronto. So far, Hailo has raised $20 million in venture capital from Accel Partners, Wellington Partners and Atomico Ventures.
Hailo has its work cut out for it though as California-based taxi app Uber gains ground in the U.S. However, Hailo already has an established footprint in its home in the United Kingdom, currently giving the company an edge.
What's next: Hailo will soon be launching apps for BlackBerry and Windows Phone. The company will also need to work with local government officials in New York and other cities looking to regulate smartphone taxi services.
