Where it's based: Viera, Fla.
When it was founded: 2000
Why it's Fierce: SkyCross is an RF solutions firm that specializes in advanced antenna technology. One of SkyCross' biggest customers is Samsung, which recently announced that it was using SkyCross' antenna technology in its BlackJack II, Juke and SGH-F700. In addition, the company supplies antennas to ZTE and Hauwei.
The Viera, Fla.-based firm has developed an isolation mode antenna technology, IMAT, that does something many thought impossible. Historically device makers have had to carefully arrange multiple antennas in a mobile device so they don't interfere with each other. This has become increasingly difficult as the number of technologies in a handset grows. As a result, many antennas have poor performance or interference issues.
To overcome these issues, SkyCross has developed a single antenna that is capable of handling multiple-in, multiple-out (MIMO) signals, as well as multiple frequencies. According to SkyCross executives, IMAT supports legacy networks and also next-generation protocols such as WiMAX. The technology not only improves antenna efficiency, but also supports fast data transfer for high definition video or music. That translates into higher data rates and longer battery life.
What to look for: SkyCross' IMAT technology started shipping in March and the company expects its technology to show up in devices by year-end.
