Smartphones took the wireless industry by storm this year. It seemed that the world's handset vendors churned out newer, faster devices every month. With that in mind, it's worth taking stock of the smartphone features and functions that are now necessities among competitive smartphones--the table stakes in the smartphone game.
FierceWireless surveyed a handful of analysts to look back at 2010 to sift through the spec sheets, feature lists and their own mental notes to find out what, by the end of the year, became table stakes in smartphones--as well as might become the table stakes in 2011.
"It simply represents a logical evolution of where things naturally go--bigger, better, faster, more," CCS Insight analyst John Jackson. "But the cadence [in the smartphone market] is accelerated."
What follows is a brief look at the smartphone table stakes of 2010 and perhaps what is to come in 2011. This list is by no means comprehensive, so feel free to let us know what you think should be on the list--for this year or next.
