Wikets raised $1.5 million from venture capital firms Andreesen Horowitz and Battery Ventures, and its first app should be available before the end of the year. While a number of companies have found success using an incentive-based system to boost user engagement (e.g. foursquare users earn badges), Wikets' first app will incentivize social networking and user recommendations--users will earn points for writing recommendations of products and places and have other users try their recommendations. The points, in turn, could be redeemed for real world prizes. Wikets is currently working on partnering with retailers.
What's next: The company's app originally aimed to launch by the end of October, but is still missing from the App Store. The success of the app will determine where the company goes next, but follow-up apps for Android and the iPad are on the company's agenda.
