NTT DoCoMo intros Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphones

Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo announced the development of the FOMA F1100 and FOMA HT1100, two new smartphones equipped with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.0 Japanese-edition OS. According to DoCoMo, data entry on the devices is accomplished via standard ten-key input layout, in effect combining smartphone capability with a traditional mobile phone interface. Primary applications include Internet Explorer Mobile, Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile and Windows Media Player 10 Mobile.

The FOMA F1100 offers access to both FOMA and wireless LAN networks for IP telephony--DoCoMo said it envisions the handset doubling as a VoIP mobile phone using in-house WLANs equipped for the operator's PASSAGE DUPLE service or its business mopera IP Centrex service, which enables outbound or internal communication by means of IP Centrex devices rather than in-house PBX. The FOMA F1100 also boasts fingerprint authentication. Additional specs include a semi-transparent TFT LCD display, an optional microSC memory card and a CMOS 1.3 megapixel camera.

The FOMA HT1100 will feature HTC's TouchFLO Touch Cube three-dimensional interface, enabling users to access and operate functions with the slide of a thumb. Streaming Media software and HTC's Audio Manager music player promise users access to content including YouTube Mobile clips and music downloads. Additional specs include a TFT LCD display, an optional microSC memory card and a CMOS 2 megapixel outer camera.

DoCoMo will begin marketing the handsets during the first quarter of 2008.
