Palm announces Windows-powered Treo

Palm has confirmed that its newest Treo smartphone will be powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. The phone will be offered exclusively by Verizon Wireless and will begin shipping in early 2006. The device supports BlueTooth and EV-DO, but sadly no WiFi. Palm has not released the name of the phone but, according to rumors, it will be called "Palm Treo 700w." This name has lead some to speculate that a PalmOS version of the phone may be announced at a later date. One interesting note is that, according to The New York Times, Microsoft allowed Palm to alter Windows Mobile for use in the Treo. Om Malik writes that this phone signals the end of Palm as we know it. Blog | Pictures
