Sprint to tweak tablet data plans, will add unlimited WiMAX

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) will change its tablet data plans slightly by adding unlimited mobile WiMAX data and a higher usage tier when the carrier launches its first WiMAX tablet, the HTC View 4G, a Sprint spokeswoman confirmed.

According to Sprint spokeswoman Kristin Wallace, the revised plans are similar in many respects to Sprint's current tablet data plans. On Sprint's EV-DO network, the carrier currently offers 1 GB of data for $20 per month, 3 GB for $45; and 5 GB for $60. When Sprint launches the View 4G on June 24, the carrier will add two new options: a tier of 10 GB of data for $90, and access to unlimited WiMAX data on the plans starting at 3 GB of EV-DO data usage and up. The rate plan changes were reported earlier by the blog Android Police.

The addition of the unlimited WiMAX data option could make the View 4G, and potentially future WiMAX tablets, more attractive to customers. Such pricing dovetails with Sprint's current offerings for EV-DO/WiMAX hotspots and USB modems, where the mobile WiMAX component is unlimited.
