Small players want review of roaming deals

In light of the mega-mergers hitting the mobile carrier industry, small, regional players say they are having a difficult time getting a fair shake when it comes to roaming agreements with these behemoths. Eight operators have petitioned the FCC to conduct a special inquiry to collect and inspect a representative sample of wireless roaming pacts confidentially. Airpeak Communications, Airtel Wireless, Cleveland Unlimited, Leap Wireless, MetroPCS, Punxsutawney Communications, Rural Telecommunications Group and Southern Communications said sample wireless roaming agreements kept confidential by the FCC would help regulators determine if nationwide operators are discriminating against smaller players and whether it needs to mandate automatic roaming deals at fair rates.
