Huawei and LG Uplus signed a memorandum of understanding under which they will create a joint Mobile Innovation Center (MIC) in Seoul, South Korea, where the companies will work on LTE Advanced carrier aggregation, small cells and 5G technologies.
"Establishing the new MIC will provide both LG Uplus and Huawei with an increased competitive advantage in the ICT market," commented Kim Sun Tae, executive vice president of the service and development division at LG Uplus, South Korea's third-largest mobile carrier.
LG Uplus previously selected the Chinese vendor as its preferred LTE technology partner to build out LTE across South Korea, noted Yang Chaobin, CMO of Huawei Wireless Networks.
In April, the two companies announced they would pioneer the use of WDM/OTN (wavelength-division multiplexing /optical transport network) technology for common public radio interface (CPRI) backhaul on LG Uplus' LTE-A network. At the time they noted the CPRI-over-WDM/OTN solution enables pooled baseband processing for distributed base stations, saving fiber resources and improving network reliability.
