Report: Alvarion may get a boost from India's BSNL

Israeli newspaper Globes is reporting that Alvarion may be on the verge of a boost given an announcement from India's large 3G mobile operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., that it will deploy WiMAX in 760 cities nationwide this fiscal year. Alvarion's shares jumped 4.8 percent in Tel Aviv.

In November, BSNL received a $524 million grant from the government to build out a nationwide mobile WiMAX network, and Alvarion has reportedly been in talks with BSNL to supply the equipment.

Alvarion has targeted India as a main growth market given the recent awards of wireless broadband licenses. BSNL and the other state operator, MTNL, were given broadband spectrum ahead of the winners of the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum auction winners last year, and the Indian government issued a grant to BSNL to build out WiMAX.
