SPOTLIGHT: WCDMA subs in Asia Pacific exceed 50M in 1Q '07

WCDMA customers in the Asia Pacific region exceeded 50 million in late January, ending the first quarter with 56.5 million, according to the Mobile World Database. WCDMA net additions amounted to 8.04 million in the first quarter. At the end of March this year, 5.1 percent of the total Asia Pacific customer base was constituted by WCDMA connections, up from 3.5 percent a year earlier. More than three quarters of Asia Pacific's WCDMA customers, or 76.5 percent, were accounted for by Japan alone at the end of the first quarter, down from 78 percent at the end of last year and 91 percent in 2005.
