WiLAN acquires 60 wireless patents from Glenayre for $8M

Patent holding company WiLAN announced it acquired wireless patents from Glenayre Electronics for $8 million in cash. WiLAN purchased a portfolio consisting of 60 issued U.S. patents and their foreign counterparts that address mobile messaging, wireless data transmission and reception. "We believe that patents in the portfolio ... are relevant to today's mobile phone market," said WiLAN Chairman and CEO Jim Skippen--potentially hinting that WiLAN will seek to leverage the patents against handset vendors. With the purchase, WiLAN increased its patent portfolio to more than 1,400 issued and pending patents. Release
