Analyzing the world's handset launches from August

Research firm Strategy Analytics tracks and ranks every handset announced by every manufacturer across the globe. The firm evaluates the specifications of each of those handsets to derive engineering trends in the space, from battery capacity to weight and thickness to whether they have a touchscreen.

Every month, the firm issues a report on the new handsets released during that month, and provides average rankings based on the specifications of those handsets. Thanks to a new teaming between Strategy Analytics and FierceWireless, we'll bring you some key figures every month from that report.

In August, Strategy Analytics tracked 106 new handset releases by 27 vendors, including several high-profile Nokia phones (N97 mini, N900, X6 and X3) and two new INQ Mobile models. Manufacturers provided detailed specifications on 55 of those handsets, and the trends showed average battery capacity was 1097 mAh, the second highest monthly average on record, despite average handset thickness being only 14.41 mm, the second lowest average on record. The firm also found Bluetooth and WiFi penetration hit 78 percent and 31 percent respectively for the new August models.
