AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) missed its planned March launch of its Digital Life home automation service, and the company is staying mum on when it will roll out the service and why the launch was delayed.
The carrier said in January that it would launch Digital Life in eight markets in March. In late March the company said the service would launch sometime "this spring," without giving a reason for the delay. At the time, the company also said it would effectively double the number of markets where it will initially launch the service from eight to 15, with plans to hit 50 markets by year-end.
AT&T representatives declined to comment on the delay and instead referred to earlier statements the company had made on the program. AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told FierceWireless in late March that the company "will share market information when we roll out the service this spring." The company cited "competitive reasons" for not sharing more information on its launch markets. Siegel also said AT&T will "share pricing information when the specific markets are announced," but did not give a specific timeframe for when that would be.
AT&T has said it will have Digital Life centers in Atlanta and Dallas that will manage the product, and the company has been actively looking for developers to make applications for Digital Life to help make the product more robust.
Over the past few months, AT&T executives have repeatedly touted home security and automation as one of the company's new growth opportunities for the future, along with the connected car, mobile healthcare and mobile payments.
