Auction Update: Bids total more than $10.5B

The federal government is close to its goal of making $15 billion from the advanced wireless services (AWS) auction. At press time, bids totaled more than $10.5 billion after 21 rounds. NextWave Telecom's AWS Wireless made an aggressive comeback as the top bidder for 47 licenses. With NextWave, Clearwire and Sprint Nextel committed to WiMAX, we could see three nationwide WiMAX players competing in the U.S. market.
