BellSouth is launching a pre-WiMax service. Beginning this August, BellSouth will deploy the wireless broadband service in Athens, Georgia, with extensions to several Florida cities to follow later in the year. The new BellSouth FastAccess Internet Service will transmit signals between local radio towers and a small non-line-of-sight desktop subscriber modem that plugs into a desktop or laptop computer, or a local router. The company has contracted with Navini Networks for its pre-WiMax Ripwave equipment. BellSouth used Navini's technology during technical trials in Daytona and Palatka, Florida.
