C Spire to let customers roll over unused data

Regional operator C Spire Wireless is bringing back the rollover concept but is applying it to unused data instead of voice minutes. Specifically, the company will let customers carry over unused data to the next month to help mitigate overage charges that can occur when they use their data bucket.

The company is introducing three new rollover data plans: $40 a month for 2 GB, $55 a month for 4 GB and $65 a month for 6 GB of rolling data plus unlimited talk, text and photos along with automatic data-overage protection and optional top-up data passes. These prices do not include the device. For contract subscribers with subsidized devices, the prices increase to $65 a month for 2 GB, $80 a month for 4 GB and $90 a month for 6 GB.

AT&T (NYSE: T) originally came up with the concept of rollover minutes in 2007 when it let customers carry unused voice minutes from month to month. The company has since replaced those voice plans, as consumers increasingly use their smartphones for data applications rather than voice calls.

C Spire said that the rolling data plans will enable customers to not worry as much about the data they are using.

C Spire has become more competitive with its price plans. In May the company introduced shared data plans, letting customers share 10 GB of data, on four smartphone lines, for $160 a month.
