Cicero Networks to enable WiFi/cellular convergence

Cicero Networks launched a platform that allows smart phones to roam between WiFi hotspots and traditional networks without losing voice calls. The hook to Cicero's offering is that it won't necessitate wireline carriers teaming up with wireless carriers, which would see such partnerships as cannibalizing their main revenue source. The service first checks for free WiFi hotspots before using traditional wireless networks. The offering is two-fold: software for the handset and a backend controller for the operator. The company said the software is downloadable to Windows Mobile-equipped handsets and the backend controller will be deployed by mid-December.
