Clearwire offers $50 promotion in bid to drum up subscribers

Clearwire is giving the gift of WiMAX.

The mobile WiMAX provider is offering customers $50 gift cards if they sign up for services before Dec. 31, the end of the fourth quarter. While the offering does not necessarily signal a major shift in long-term strategy for the company, it is a sign that Clearwire is aggressively pursuing subscriber additions as it continues its network buildout. The $50 gift card can be used to purchase a Clear USB modem, which the company sells for $49.99 plus tax.

The company, flush with fresh financing, has said it now has more than enough money to cover 120 million POPs by the end of 2010. In November, Clearwire said it raised an additional $920 million in debt financing, giving it a total of $2.8 billion in recent debt and equity financing.

In the third quarter, Clearwire posted a loss of $82.42 million, wider than the loss of $72.7 million in the year-ago quarter. Revenue rose 13 percent to $68.8 million in the quarter. Clearwire said at the end of September it had 173,000 subscribers in its Clear 4G markets, out of a total subscriber base of 555,000.
