Consolidation pressures Nortel, Motorola

Analysts are saying that Nortel and Motorola will have to make some bold moves in light of the joint venture Nokia and Siemens announced on Monday to combine their network infrastructure business. With the new joint venture on par in size and market value with Ericsson and the combined Lucent-Alcatel, where do Nortel and Motorola turn? We could actually see these vendors shed businesses or make strategic investments and acquisitions to become specialists in certain areas. The Wall Street Journal says Nortel is reportedly vying to buy or partner with Siemens's enterprise business, which provides Internet-based telephony services to companies.
