Cricket expands into Charleston, SC

Leap Communications continues its push into new markets with tomorrow's launch of its flat-rate Cricket-branded service in Charleston, SC. The company says its service will be available to about 512,000 new potential customers in the region.

Cricket will open two company-owned stores in the area, plus customers will be able to purchase Cricket service plans at seven exclusive Cricket retailers and at 20 other retail locations throughout the area.

The expansion into Charleston is key to Leap's growth strategy. The operator has been focused on improving its coverage and increasing its footprint and that has paid off significantly. At the end of the first quarter, Leap had net subscriber adds of 318,000 up from 110,000 during the same quarter in 2006. Current Analysis analyst Weston Henderek says that flat-rate carriers such as Leap and MetroPCS are becoming a bigger threat to nationwide operators as they increase their market coverage, improve their device selection and offer better roaming packages.
