Exalt launches new microwave backhaul system

LAS VEGAS--Exalt Communications today unveiled a new microwave backhaul system aimed at carriers, wireless ISPs and enterprises looking to cut backhaul costs for next-generation wireless networks. The new system, called ExtendAir, is a zero-footprint Fast Ethernet and native TDM licensed microwave backhaul system optimized for LTE traffic, as well as for WiMAX, WiFi and other IP backhaul, the company said.

The company said the new system, which works across spectrum bands from 2 GHz to 40 GHz, will reduce the cost per megabit-mile for carriers and other companies. Exalt said the new system will give carriers a lower cost-per-bit backhaul solution, give WISPS a leg up against larger competitors and allow enterprises that are switching from legacy voice systems to IP-based systems an easier and cheaper transition.

Exalt said its offering is compact and can be put on towers quickly and easily, allowing carriers to use a single radio. The company said the new system will also help speed along the adoption of microcells and picocells to meet growing data demands, and can address the need for more  backhaul capacity in hotspots within the network.

As more carriers transition to IP architecture, the competition for mobile backhaul contracts is growing increasingly fierce. However, a report last year from Sky Light Research found that the $6 billion microwave point-to-point radio market continues to be dominated by Tier 1 vendors like Ericsson, NEC, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks.
