Firefly Mobile launches child phone service

Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Firefly Mobile yesterday launched a mobile phone and wireless service targeted at children aged 8 to 12. The MVNO is offering wireless service through a partnership with Cingular Wireless. The phone is designed especially for children and is available at Target, on Firefly's site, and though other outlets for $99.99. The Firefly phone comes with 30 minutes of air time and parents can buy additional pay-as-you-go buckets of time in increments of $10, $25, or $50.

Firefly designed the phone and service to meet the needs of both parents and children. The phones allow parents to not only program in their numbers so their children can easily call them, but the phones also screen calls so only a specified group of phone numbers are allowed to call the handsets.
