Google, EarthLink win WiFi bid in SF

The city of San Francisco selected a joint bid from EarthLink and Google to provide a WiFi network. Under the proposal, free and paid wireless services would be available throughout the city using Tropos and Motorola equipment. Google will manage the free 300 Kbps WiFi service, while EarthLink will offer the faster premium service of 1 Mbps for up to $20 a month. EarthLink and Google outbid an initial five competing bids, but the contract must still be signed off by the city of San Francisco and reviewed by the Board of Supervisors.
