Harbinger faces uphill battle on LTE network

Philip Falcone and his private-equity firm, Harbinger Capital Partners (a Fierce 15 winner), faces a rough road in its quest to break into the wireless industry. The company--which plans to launch a nationwide, wholesale LTE network--needs billions of dollars to turn its vision into reality, according to analysts. If the company does decide to try and raise the money for the network, instead of simply selling its spectrum assets, it will need to do so quickly; Harbinger is facing a daunting buildout timetable over the next six years, and if it does not meet its goals, it may lose its rights to its spectrum holdings.
