LTE stakeholders debate patent pool

The LTE patent pool efforts that started last year picked up in earnest last week, according to Via Licensing. The patent pool facilitator said 14 major LTE patent holders met last week in San Francisco to build the framework for an LTE patent pool. The company did not say which specific patent holders were at the meeting, but it said that they came from China, France, Finland, Germany, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands and the United States. Notably absent from that list is Sweden, so it's unclear if leading LTE vendor Ericsson attended the meeting. As more and more operators deploy LTE, patent holders are looking to create patent pools to establish standard and predictable licensing rates for manufacturers. According to Via, the next meeting of the patent holders will take place in March in Washington, D.C. Release
