Metric: Camera phones top 295M units by year-end

According to a recent report from Gartner, global sales for camera phones will top 295 million units by the end of 2005. The report also said that camera phones will account for 38 percent of all mobile handset sales across the globe this year, an increase of about 14 percent from 2004. Gartner predicts that 70 percent of all mobile phones will have an embedded camera by 2009. A crucial factor in the growth of camera phones will be the decreasing cost of combining the two technologies. Gartner expects that cost to be cut in half over the next four years. The sale of camera phones is particularly popular in Western Europe where they account for 55 percent of all mobile sales. The report predicts that camera phone sales in that region will reach 85 million by the end of the year.
