Metric: Forecast of 810M handsets sold in 2005

According to a recent report from Gartner, mobile phone sales worldwide reached 205 million, a 22 percent increase, in the three months leading up to September. Gartner expects that handset sales worldwide will reach 810 million for the year. While total handset sales worldwide grew slower than the 26 percent from the same period a year ago, sales in Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America were up 40 percent. Handset manufacturers saw high volume of sales of their basic, less expensive models in developing countries. Gartner predicts a 10 percent to 15 percent increase of handset sales worldwide in 2006.
