Not all Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 4S smartphones are created equally, according to a new report from Metrico Wireless.

Metrico, the mobile performance and measurement company, found that AT&T Mobility's (NYSE:T) version of the device delivered faster mobile data downlink and uplink speeds and faster web browsing than the iPhone 4S from Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S).
The data speed results are not that surprising, since the iPhone 4S supports HSDPA speeds up to 14.4 Mbps on AT&T's network--faster than CDMA EV-DO data provided by Verizon and Sprint. According to Metrico, the average data download speed on an AT&T iPhone 4S was 3.2 Mbps, compared to around 1 Mbps for Verizon and 581 Kbps on Sprint.
According to the report, call success rates, or the ability to make and hold calls successfully, were slightly better for the Verizon iPhone 4S than for AT&T and Sprint versions. Additionally, Metrico found that Sprint's iPhone 4S performs better than the other carriers in live network voice quality on the uplink when a user is speaking, while AT&T's iPhone 4S takes the lead in live network voice quality on the downlink. However, Metrico said the two carriers' results are comparable.
Metrico said it performed over 21,000 web page downloads, ran more than 8,000 data download/upload tests while mobile and while stationary and generated approximately 6,000 voice calls, all using the company's global measurement system platform. The company also said it used the ITU-T P.863 speech quality algorithm known as POLQA to compare voice quality across the three carrier's networks and that this approach resulted in "robust, objective and repeatable analysis of performance from the subscriber point of view, in laboratory and live network conditions reflective of typical usage."
