Motorola: Android phone out in mid-2009

It is now no longer a secret that Motorola is developing an Android phone of their own built around social networking, and a few key details have been leaked about the phone, according to a report in BusinesWeek.

The details, which leaked just days before T-Mobile USA launches the G1, the first handset running on Google's Android platform, are as scant as they are juicy. The phone will have a touchscreen interface similar to Apple's iPhone 3G, a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a bevy of social networking features, and is scheduled to be released in the second quarter of 2009.

Motorola has been showing spec sheets to carriers for the past few months, according to the report, meaning that just as speculation about the G1 built to a frenzy, Motorola was readying in secret their own Android phone.

Motorola did not reveal any more details but said in a statement, "We're excited about the innovation possibilities on Android and look forward to delivering great products in partnership with Google," as well as other members of the Open Handset Alliance.
