Nextel to launch trial with IPWireless

Nextel Communications will launch a trial broadband wireless service using UMTS TD-CDMA technology from IPWireless. The trial will begin in the third quarter this year and will take place in Washington, DC; Arlington, Alexandria, and Reston, Virginia; and Bethesda, Maryland. The trial will test a range of services, including wireless broadband access for laptops, desktops, and PDAs, backhaul for enterprise campuses, and an array of digital content services including video streaming, online gaming, document collaboration, and video conferencing. The trial will run for six months. There is no word how Nextel's pending merger with Sprint will impact the trial or the result. Nextel ran a similar trial using Flarion Technologies' solution in North Carolina.
