Philips: U.S. carrier to launch voice WiFi this year

Chip maker Royal Philips Electronics said a U.S. cellular carrier will launch voice-over-WiFi this year using Philips' Nexperio 6120 chipset. Philips wouldn't identify the carrier, but it's probably safe to assume the customer is T-Mobile USA, the owner of a significant number of WiFi hotspots throughout the nation, and the nationwide operator that is behind the rest of its competitors in the 3G game. Nexperia's UMA technology allows calls to tunnel from WiFi access points through the Internet and onto a cellular network.
