Report: Qualcomm continues to lead cellular baseband market, but MediaTek makes LTE strides

According to a new report from research firm Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), MediaTek, Spreadtrum, Samsung LSI and HiSilicon grabbed the top five baseband revenue share spots in the second quarter. Despite increased competition, the analysts said, Qualcomm once again led the baseband market with 60 percent revenue share, followed by MediaTek with 19 percent revenue share and Spreadtrum with 6 percent revenue share. However, Strategy Analytics analyst Sravan Kundojjala noted that MediaTek continued its LTE baseband momentum and posted 36 percent sequential growth in its LTE baseband shipments compared to the first quarter. "China continues to be the major source of LTE growth for MediaTek," he said. "Strategy Analytics believes that MediaTek is on track to reach its 150 million annual LTE baseband shipment goal in 2015. Despite its LTE growth, MediaTek experienced weakness in its relatively more profitable 3G baseband business as a result of Spreadtrum's inroads." Release
