SPOTLIGHT: The battle for Latin America heats up

Two carriers have long battled for supremacy in Latin America: América Móvil, controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, and Telefónica of Spain. América Móvil has the upper hand, with 113.9 million wireless clients to Telefónica's 78.8 million, but there is plenty of room to grow since 319 million Latin Americans (56 percent of the population) have mobile phones and analysts estimate that penetration will reach 79 percent, or 476 million customers, in five years.
