IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker indicates worldwide mobile-phone shipments fell slightly short of an all-time high in the second quarter, reaching a volume of 237.8 million units. Shipments of handsets increased 2.1 percent from the first quarter to the second quarter. IDC says 470.7 million units have been shipped so far this year, suggesting that the industry may be close to shipping 1 billion units in the year. Release
