SPOTLIGHT: Low-Cost Mobile Phones

The wireless industry is focused on making low-cost cell phones for developing markets. Philips recently announced a phone that will sell for less than $20. The GSM Association is trying to foster viable wireless services for consumers who can only pay $5 or so per month. Chip makers are also focused on making lower-priced modules to help reduce the cost of cell phones. While 80 percent of the world's population lives within access of cell phone coverage, only 25 percent use wireless services. Article
